Murphy’s Kids has been toting their blend of reggae, ska and rock for over nine years and they show no signs of slowing down. You can see them rocking shows up and down the east coast and selling out shows at home any given week and maybe, on a good night. They can pound out three-hour live sets full of your favorite reggae and soul covers or you could catch them blazing through sets of aggressive reggae and anthemic rock and roll. You’ll also see their new full length CD Departures on independent record store shelves and in rotation on your favorite internet and independent radio stations. Playing their style and sticking to their guns has allowed them to carve out a niche in their local and regional scenes. Being on the road supporting Departures has got Murphy’s Kids pushing ahead at full tilt.
So far, so good. During their tenure, Murphy’s Kids has played hundreds of shows in every all-ages venue in their hometown, Richmond, VA and in bars, colleges and live music hotspots throughout the East. Among these is the annual Happy Skalidays! which will be in its tenth year running and has, to date, raised thousands of dollars for local charities like Food Not Bombs. They were also a featured artist for two years running on the SouthernSka Tour hosted by Southernska.com. They have recorded and released four EP CDs including 2005’s Murphy’s Kids presents the Anti-Corporate Beach Party which has since gone into multiple pressings. Club owners and promoters continue to find how well MK works on bills with bands of regional and international fame as varied as Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish, Mutemath, The Fray, Hackensaw Boys and Alien Ant Farm.
They have been compared to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and the RX Bandits, but you’ll find everything on their turntables from old school reggae like Peter Tosh to new school progressive rock like the Mars Volta and Coheed and Cambria. Murphy's Kids is bringing together elements of rock and reggae to make your heart beat a little faster and to get your booty moving and they're working hard to bring it to a town near you!
